Last year, the L.A. County Department of Children and Family services received close to 700 referrals from people in our community to report allegations of sex trafficking of a child or youth under the age of 18 years old.  Though it is hard to believe, Los Angeles County is considered by the FBI to be one of the top areas in the nation where the sex trafficking of minors is a problem plaguing our society.

We invite community members to join us on October 23rd for a free training on “The Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: Raising Awareness and Building a Trauma-Responsive Community of Caregivers”.  This free training will explain how any youth can easily fall prey to exploiters, show participants how to identify an at-risk or victim of Commercial Sexual Exploitation, and share, through interactive and fun activities, how to apply a trauma-responsive approach to support victims towards healing and recovery. This event will also provide information on the various ways the community can support the needs of youth that have been impacted by sex trafficking

We will also be celebrating and honoring foster caregivers by highlighting the incredible support and commitment that our caregivers give to L.A. County’s most vulnerable youth. Our day together will give us the honor and pleasure to express our gratitude to our everyday heroes that bring hope to children, youth, and families.

This free event will include:

  • A hosted Breakfast and Lunch. Breakfast will be served starting at 8:30 a.m. and the training begins promptly at 9:30 a.m.
  • Special Recognition Awards in honor of Foster Caregivers
  • 3 training credits available for eligible caregivers
  • Resource Tables
  • Prizes

Girls ages 11 to 18 across Los Angeles County are invited to attend the I Matter: Girls Empowerment Conference hosted by the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. In its fourth year, the free event provides an inspirational day that encourages girls to turn up the volume on their own voices and believe in a life of possibilities by building their confidence, exploring pathways to college, and thinking about their career goals. The event offers interactive workshops, powerful speakers, networking, and exciting lunch activities. This year’s workshops include topics such as Building Confidence through Hip-Hop, Financial Literacy, and Cyber Bullying.

Originally started in 2015 as an empowering luncheon for 75 girls, the event has grown substantially to an inspirational conference that hosts hundreds of girls each year. This year, leaders are hoping for 1,000 girls to be in attendance.

Dear neighbor,

Over the last year, House Democrats have been working hard to ensure the American people have access to affordable, quality healthcare. As a member of the Subcommittee on Health for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, my colleagues and I have introduced, marked up and passed countless pieces of legislation that put the health and livelihoods of the American people first.

I invite older adults in the 44th Congressional District to join me for my Annual Senior Briefing and Health Fair to tell you more about my work in Congress to improve health care delivery.  Various organizations will also be offering free services for those who wish to take preventative measures and screenings to improve their long term health.

Don't miss out the opportunity to win raffle prizes, explore services and talk to my caseworkers and I on how we can better assist you.

If you have any additional questions or would like to RSVP, please call our office at 310-831-1799.

I hope to see you there!

In community,

Nanette Diaz Barragán
U.S. Representative for California's 44th District
